On Friday 14th June, we proudly took a team of St Michael’s athletes from Years 5 to 8 to the Kent Athletics Championships at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford. For some, it was their first taste of county-level competition; for others, it was a return to the big stage although the butterflies in the stomach were very much the same!

After a minibus journey and a few tentative warm-up strides, those early nerves quickly turned into focus and determination. It was clear from the outset that our athletes were ready to rise to the occasion and they certainly did.

We are super proud of every single pupil who competed. Each athlete gave their all, supported one another brilliantly and did both themselves and the school proud. The sense of camaraderie around the track and field was fantastic to see, with pupils cheering teammates on as loudly as if they were competing themselves (sometimes even louder!).

There were some truly outstanding performances. Grace P stole the headlines by becoming Kent Champion in the U13 long jump and sprinted her way into the 200m Final, finishing an impressive 2nd in Kent. Hugo M produced a superb run in the U13 1500m, achieving a personal best to claim 2nd place - proof that all those training miles really do pay off! Nzu O showed great courage and talent competing a year above her age group, finishing 2nd in the U12 long jump, while Zach R powered his way to 2nd place in the 600m with a typically determined and gutsy performance.

As a result of these fantastic efforts, all four athletes have qualified for the National Athletics Finals which will take place at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Wednesday 1st July. This is a remarkable achievement and a wonderful opportunity for them to compete on a national stage, we are all hugely excited for what lies ahead.

Beyond the medals and podium finishes, it was the collective spirit of the team that stood out most. Every pupil embraced the challenge, supported one another wholeheartedly and represented St Michael’s with pride, resilience and positivity.

A big thank you must also go to all of our parents for their continued support, whether it’s early morning lifts, late evening washes of muddy kit or enthusiastic cheering from the sidelines. It makes a real difference.

Well done once again to all involved, it is a privilege to watch all our young athletes compete; what a brilliant day for St Michael’s Athletics.
