St Michael's Colts A boys’ hockey team are celebrating with silver medals following their performance at the UKSA Hockey Tournament in Burgess Hill on Wednesday 5th March.
The competition, featuring 16 teams, was split into four groups of four. St Michael's first game was against Cumnor House School: the match ended in a draw, giving the boys a long break before their second fixture. In St Michael's next game against Hazelwood School, the team began playing much better, demonstrating free-flowing hockey. St Michael's eventually found the back of the net and secured a well-deserved victory.
St Michael's final group-stage match was against Windlesham House Prep. St Michael's remained focused and, after sustained pressure, scored twice to win 2-0, winning the group and securing a place in the Cup Competition.
In the Quarter-Finals St Michael's faced Handcross Prep School. The boys continued to improve with each game, creating several chances before converting one to win and advance to the Semi-Finals against Amherst School. This was a closely contested match, with both teams having opportunities at either end. Eventually, St Michael’s broke the deadlock, winning 1-0 and booking a place in the Final.
In the Final, St Michael's played against a well-drilled Skippers Hill School side. St Michael's conceded a goal and, despite creating numerous chances to get back into the game, were unable to convert, ultimately finishing as runners-up.
