Maths lessons at St Michael’s Prep School follow the White Rose Maths curriculum until the end of Year 6, at which point our Years 7 and 8 pupils begin working towards the ISEB Common Entrance 13+ Maths syllabus.
From part-way through Year 3, the children work in whole class ability groups, a strategy which continues throughout their time at our Prep school.
Years 5 to 8 pupils prepare for individual school entrance exams as well as the 11+ (Kent Test) and Common Entrance at 13+. Potential Scholars are stretched within their teaching group and offered additional challenge in small extra-curricular groups. We identify and extend talented pupils through reasoning and application whilst supporting those who need extra help through small group work and targeted activities.
Maths at St Michael’s Prep is not just about hard work in the classroom! Years 2 and 3 have fun getting to know each other at their Maths Challenge morning, helping to build relationships and support transition.
Pupils in the Prep school enjoy competing against their peers in our annual house maths races and Countdown-inspired number challenges, as well as taking part in national competitions run by the Mathematical Association and the UK Mathematics Trust.
