English holds a core position in St Michael’s Prep School’s curriculum.
The key English skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening underpin our pupils’ learning in all areas of their education. The aim of our English Department is to guide the children to becoming effective communicators at the same time as engendering a life-long love of literature and language.
We support our children in developing an inquiring mind, enthusiasm and curiosity for all that life has to offer. Our English lessons develop skills and provide the pupils with joy and broader horizons.
We recognise the importance of activities which extend the curriculum outside the confines of the normal school day such as visiting authors, poets and illustrators, World Book Day, debating groups and events such as Spelling Bees, creative writing competitions and school trips.
We visit theatres to see studied texts brought to life on stage. Recently we have seen The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, A Christmas Carol, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Animal Farm. We also visit the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre on an annual basis.
Our magical Prep Library is open to all Prep pupils who visit the space for English lessons and can enjoy reading during breaktimes under the warm guidance of our Librarian, Mrs Yarrow. The aim of our Library is to foster a love of reading in the pupils which they can share with each other and their families. We also have an outdoor library where the children can enjoy a book in the sunshine during the warmer months.
