Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there and how they develop and change over time.
Pupils at St Michael’s Prep School explore both the physical properties of Earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. They examine how human culture interacts with the natural environment and the way that locations and places can impact people.
Years 3 and 4 pupils learn how Geography and History are linked in their Humanities lessons. They investigate explorers such as Shackleton as well as topics including the Ancient Egyptians, Celts and Romans.
Years 5 and 6 pupils cover a variety of human and physical Geography topics including global location where fieldwork, Google Earth, Digimaps and Geoguesser enhance their learning.
Years 7 and 8 pupils follow the St Michael’s Diploma, discovering the topics of rivers, settlement and population. Fieldwork is an important aspect of Geography and throughout Years 7 and 8 pupils use a range of techniques across the school grounds and further afield to London Stratford for a regeneration investigation. Geographical skills such as GIS mapping, infographic analysis, presentations and class discussions are all strengthened throughout the two years.
Years 7 and 8 pupils with St Michael’s Prep Academic Scholarships learn how to interpret and respond to data and use data and other sources to write extensively on physical, human and environmental Geography topics.
