Prep Computing

Back

At St Michael’s, our Computing curriculum is designed to ensure every child feels confident, engaged and well-prepared for a digital future. We focus on three key areas:

  • Computer Science: Understanding the foundations of how things work and are programmed
  • Information Technology: Exploring applications and what pupils can create
  • Digital Literacy: Learning how to participate safely in the digital world

Year 3: Pupils begin with the basics, from using a mouse to saving files correctly. They build on their initial coding skills by creating more advanced games in Scratch Junior, progressing to Scratch by the end of the year. They also learn to use PowerPoint, Word, and Canva as well as managing their personal email accounts safely.

Year 4: Pupils advance their coding skills with more complex games in Scratch and learn about computer networks. They are introduced to Excel spreadsheets and get creative with stop motion animation on iPads.

Year 5: Pupils' coding skills are put to the test in the 3D gaming environment Kodu. Pupils also create simple webpages in HTML and work with Micro:bits to develop light sensors, step counters and musical cardboard guitars.

Year 6: Pupils participate in a Dragons’ Den style competition to create the best electronic toy prototype. They also produce an online safety webpage in Canva and create ‘how to’ videos with Clipchamp.

Years 7 and 8: Pupils transition from block-based coding in Scratch to text-based coding in Python. They learn advanced Excel functions and get creative with 3D architectural design in SketchUp. Year 8 pupils also explore the ethics of AI and experiment with vector graphics.

Online safety is a core component of every unit, ensuring the pupils are always aware of how to navigate the digital world safely.
