Our Computing lessons follow the CAS (Computing at Schools) Progression Pathways which covers a range of topics from algorithms, programming and development to Online Safety. All projects are designed to be practical, exciting, engaging and creative.
Examples of the topics and programs covered include Scratch, Microsoft Excel, Kodu, Binary code, Hexadecimal, HTML, Python, Artificial Intelligence, Alan Turing and Enigma machines.
In Years 3 and 4, pupils enjoy additional Computing lessons focusing on digital skills. They explore topics including the internet, emails and Microsoft Office programmes which prepare them for future year groups where they are required to know and use these skills for cross-curricular project work.
Online Safety is covered at the start of each year and during SIDs (Safer Internet Day). More information about our Online Safety provision at St Michael’s Prep School can be viewed here.
Every Trinity (summer) Term, our Year 8 pupils visit Bletchley Park. During this trip, pupils learn about the history of coding and how it was used during the Second World War.
St Michael’s Prep Digital Leaders are a selected group of pupils with various responsibilities ranging from teaching other pupils how to use software, to finding solutions to technical problems such as printers not working. Once selected, Digital Leaders undergo training and assist staff and pupils throughout the year. Digital Leaders visit either Legoland Windsor or Paultons Park where they attend computing workshops and are introduced to more complex computing features.
