Pre-Prep Computing

At St Michael’s, our Computing curriculum is designed to ensure every child feels confident, engaged and well-prepared for a digital future. We focus on three key areas:

  • Computer Science: Understanding the foundations of how things work and are programmed
  • Information Technology: Exploring applications and what pupils can create
  • Digital Literacy: Learning how to participate safely in the digital world

French Day iPads

Year 1:

Pupils learn to log on to an iPad, find Safari and search for simple apps. In Michaelmas Term, they use Scratch Junior to learn the basics of coding, creating a series of increasingly challenging animations to explore a range of coding commands. In Lent Term, they have a further exploration of algorithms whilst filming a ‘TV Cooking Show’, learning how to put clear instructions in the right order, as well as learning a range of camera techniques. This is followed by a series of lessons learning about online safety following Safer Internet Day in February. In Trinity Term, the children use a painting app to explore digital art tools, and later in the term, learn how to make a simple online book, experimenting with some basic typing and design skills.

Year 2:

Pupils recap how to log in to an iPad, use Safari for simple search terms and find specific apps. In Michaelmas Term, they use Scratch Junior to recap the basics of coding and build on their Scratch Junior knowledge from Year 1, creating a series of simple games. In Lent Term, they use the online program J2E Data to learn how to collect data, create a tally and frequency chart, and turn these charts into digital pictograms. Later in the term, they explore digital music using Chrome Music Lab, allowing them to compose their own rhythms and melodies directly into the app. In Trinity Term, they have an introduction to digital writing and design, creating their own books in Book Creator and later taking their own photos to illustrate the book. The children also have an extra weekly lesson to introduce the IT Suite in Prep School, where they learn to log in to the network, navigate a Windows PC and use a mouse.
